Greatly maligned by many, Don Valley Stadium was in many ways a marvellous home for SFC for three seasons. The number of games postponed could be counted on one hand and if you couldn't play on that pitch you couldn't play at all ! Opposition supporters used to comment on the lack of atmosphere but in the main there is very little atmosphere at most Non League grounds (but we're getting there at The Coach & Horses). I lost count of the number of occasions when opposition players faces used to break into a broad grin when their eyes first clapped eyes on the glorious setting in front of them. How many looks like that do you see in the NCEFL ? Not many given the cramped changing conditions and sloping pitches. So what was the problem ? The cost. It wasn't cheap to hire and with crowds on average of around 50 to 60 there was never any profit. Takings over the bar went straight to the Stadium and the whole situation just couldn't go on. Which is a shame. How fitting for the City of Sheffield it would have been for the World's Oldest Football Club to have been based at one of the cities finest stadiums. The following photographs capture a few highlights from our brief spell at Don Valley. |
