Following the Under-19s impressive finish
to their season with the 5-1 defeat of Eastwood Town Under-19s on Thursday evening, Sheffield FC Ladies ended their 2006/7
campaign by humbling the League Champions, Guiseley Ladies (P19, W18, L1 before today), with a truly magnificent team performance
on a hot, strength-sapping, Sunday afternoon at the Bright Finance Stadium.
In a match that took 2.1/2 hours to complete,
Sheffield were straight out of the blocks and 'up for it', taking only 3 minutes to open the scoring from a corner headed
home by Helen Wakefield. A lengthy stoppage ensued half way through the first period when Sheffield defender, Chloe Sutton,
fell awkwardly and was in severe pain from a dislocated a finger. With a paramedic amongst the home players, the referee suspended
play to allow initial treatment to be administered before a trip to hospital was organised. With play eventually resumed,
Sheffield soon extended their lead thanks to a thumping 12-yard drive from Lynne Grainger, the score then remaining at 2-0
until half time.
A minute into the second half, that became 3-0 when Jodie Crofts took advantage of an unfortunate
collision between a Guiseley defender and her 'keeper, stroking the resultant loose ball into the unguarded net. Both players
apparently recovered sufficiently to carry on, but it soon became obvious that the defender was 'doing a Boults', and play
was again suspended for some time while an ambulence was summoned and she was taken off to hospital with concussion.
The
rest of the game saw Guisely becoming more of a threat and pulling it back to 3-1, but Sheffield were always capable of hitting
them on the break, so a second goal from the visitors made little difference as it was sandwiched by a brace from home top
scorer, Lisa Bailey, who took her total for the season to 33 and thus broke the previous record of 31 set by Claire Holmes
a couple of seasons ago.
The Sheffield players left the field tired but triumphant, and went off to the pub in the
company of the patched up Chloe Sutton, who had returned in time to join in the celebrations.

On a very exposed playing field in the East
Coast 'resort' of Hull, Sheffield FC Ladies displayed skill, determination and stoic enthusiasm to overcome everything
the elements could throw at them (a strong cross-pitch wind carrying freezing rain) with an impressive demolition
of league newcomers Greatfield Belles in the highest scoring match of the season so far.
Sheffield were soon on their way when captain Nell Taylor netted from close range after only three
minutes, but were pegged back ten minutes later when the same player was harshly judged to have handled in the penalty area.
The resulting spot kick gave 'keeper Caz Whiteman no chance as it was blasted into the roof of the net. But that was
the closest the home side came to making a challenge as the second half of the opening period saw visiting strikers Lisa Bailey
and Lisa Handey bag two apiece before Helen Wakefield despatched Club's sixth just before half time.
After an understandably short break in the inhospitable conditions, Sheffield resumed the pressure
on the hosts, and the middle third of the second half yielded another four goals for Club, with the two Lisas both
completing their hat-tricks before Jodie Crofts weighed in with a brace - the first a trademark twenty-yarder and the second
direct from a corner with the inswinging ball evading attackers and defenders alike before coming to rest in the Belles' net.
In between Jodie's strikes, the home side registered their only other goal of the game.
In the last fifteen minutes, and with the ball spending so much time in the home side's half that Caz Whiteman
was in severe danger of suffering hypothermia, Lisa Handy decided to make the Player Of The Match voting easier for all
concerned by bagging her second hat-trick of the afternoon. Her sixth goal (Sheffield's thirteenth) saw
the match brought to an end in the rapidly gathering gloom, and everyone quickly headed off to the car park for shelter and
warmth.
It was a long way to go, the conditions were awful, but the result put a smile on the faces of everyone
there associated with Sheffield FC Ladies. And never before have I seen a player (Kate Rowell, in this case) whooping
with delight and running off the pitch sporting a grin wider than the Grand Canyon upon being subsitiuted!
The next game sees the visit of Barnsley FC ladies to the Bright Finance Stadium for the second
round of the County Cup. With Barnsley currently lying second in the division above Sheffield's it will be a sterner
test for our girls than their romp in Hull.

Sheffield Ladies extended their unbeaten run
to seven games at a windswept Bright Finance Stadium with a hard-fought win over Wigton Moor, although the final score in
no way reflected the almost total dominance of the home side. With a blustery wind and evidence of a saturated
pitch down the pub-side wing making it hard going for both sides, the hosts took the game to the visitors from the off, only
resolute defending, some weak finishing and a very competent 'keeper leading to it still being goalless
at half time. The closest the home side came to breaking the deadlock was a rasping shot from the edge of the penalty
area by Lisa Bailey which was heading just inside the post until the Wigton Moor 'keeper somehow got across
her goal to divert it for a corner.
Sheffield carried their dominance into the second half and were soon rewarded with a goal, albeit
thanks to a large slice of luck. Played in by Jodie Crofts, Lisa Bailey found herself with the ball at her feet in the
six-yard box and struck a shot that took a huge deflection off a defender to leave the unfortunate 'keeper
completely wrong-footed and helpless. That lead was extended twenty minutes into the half when Lisa Bailey, again fed
by Jodie Crofts, took possession of the ball just outside the penalty area and placed a neat shot over the 'keeper and
just under the bar. From then on it was a repeat of the first half until, just as the game was entering stoppage
time, one of home 'keeper Caz Whiteman's few touches of the ball went straight to a Wigton Moor player who calmly despatched it
back into the Sheffield net. No problem - with the referee surely due to call time at any moment, the game was
safe. And we found ourselves still clinging to that belief ten minutes later when the final whistle eventually blew,
the referee somehow finding almost 12 minutes of added time in a game that had contained few serious stoppages. It's
interesting to note that the aforementioned official had also allowed his two unofficial assistants (recruited one from each
of the two teams' coaching staff) to spend the whole of the second half running the line at the same end of the pitch,
one at each side, whilst the other end had no one patrolling at all. We do get 'em, don't we?
